Motivations of Agency and Communion
The core motivations driving human behavior are agency, the desire to be an agent and make things happen, and communion, the need for connection and belonging. While everyone possesses both motives, on average, boys tend to have stronger agency motives. Boys typically choose activities that allow for agency, like games that simulate war, reflecting an evolutionary trait for enjoying hunting and war. Engaging in activities like paintball where they can practice their skills and compete is particularly thrilling for boys.
