Around 100 years ago, the US introduced a literacy requirement in 1917, which led to a significant shift in immigration policy. The concerns escalated during World War I, with fears of immigrants not assimilating and posing a national security threat. Eventually, in 1921, the National Origins Act was passed, which completely banned Asian immigration and limited European immigration based on the 1890 census numbers, discriminating against certain ethnic and religious groups.
