The Asymmetry of Sleep and Catching Up on Sleep

Don't worry about waking up in the middle of the night as long as you can go back to sleep. You can make up for lost sleep the next morning or by going to bed earlier. Catching the first phase of sleep is crucial, but the sleep in the middle of the night may be different. One person's sleep architecture includes waking up once per night, but their sleep is deep and dreams are vivid toward morning. The second half of the night has longer REM sleep periods, which are the deepest sleep.
