Quantum Gravity Challenges: Space-Time as a System
To develop a quantum theory of gravity, it must inherently include a quantum theory of space-time, as gravity is fundamentally a theory of space-time itself. This presents a unique challenge since, according to Heisenberg's principles, an observer outside the system is needed to validate measurements. However, when the system comprises space-time, there is by definition no external observer, complicating the formulation of a compatible quantum theory. Therefore, the difficulties in formulating quantum gravity arise from both conceptual frameworks and technical approaches, with the requirement for external observation becoming a significant barrier to progress.
