In the search for new lands, Spanish explorers like Basko Nunez de Balboa set out from the Caribbean to find new territories. While Cortez was occupied in Cuba, Balboa became the first European to see the Pacific Ocean. Other Spanish colonists, including Juan Ponce de Leon, also landed on the coasts of Colombia and Venezuela. These armed entrepreneurs were driven by the desire for discovery and expansion.
