Special lending or direct lending is when private credit lenders such as Apollo, KKR, or Blackstone lend to mid-size to smaller-sized companies that cannot go to a bank or find it harder to go to a bank. The interest rates paid by the borrower are typically wider than that of a bank as private lenders will ask for more compensation for taking risk. The syndicated loan market involves bigger companies and was affected by the leverage buyout boom in 2021, which contributed to banks pulling back and provisioning for it. This was reflected in earnings data.
