NOTE

Exploring Foreignness and Belonging Through Characters in Italian Stories

The author's project of beginning to write in Italian is a way of exploring the struggle with foreignness and not feeling at home. The characters in the new collection of Roman stories are either directly struggling with or subtly divulging this struggle with foreignness. The stories are situated from the point of view of Italians, with many characters incidentally having a different skin color or being referred to as a foreigner. This approach is seen as a way of working out the question of foreignness through the characters, reflecting the author's own experience of moving to Rome and trying to understand what it's like to move to a new country.
