NOTE

Impact of modern paints and sealants on building toxins

Buildings constructed after 1970 were initially thought to be more dangerous due to being more airtight, but further investigation revealed that it was the use of modern paints and sealants containing anti-fungal chemicals that led to the production of more toxic molds and toxins. The unintended consequence of using these chemicals was the natural selection of molds and toxins that could tolerate the exposure to the poison, making them more toxic. This led to the activation of genes in fungal species, causing them to produce toxins when they previously didn't, with the main role of a mycotoxin having nothing to do with defense.
