Social Contagion and Emotional Influence
Girls and women are more susceptible to social trends and emotional influence compared to men. Research by Nicholas Christakis and James Fowler shows that emotions and behaviors like depression and smoking spread through social networks, with women having a greater impact due to their openness and tendency to share feelings. Men, on the other hand, have less influence as they are less likely to discuss their emotions openly. This phenomenon of social contagion existed even before the age of social media, with negative emotions spreading more rapidly among networks of girls and women.
