Bretton Woods in 1944 creates a new monetary system. John Maynard Keynes and Harry Dexter White, both Keynesians, lead the conference. The US dollar becomes the dominant currency backed by gold. The rest of the Western world pegs their currencies to the dollar. The Soviet Union was considered for membership. Harry Dexter White was later accused of being a Soviet spy.
