Understanding CPI Components
Food accounts for 13% of CPI and has increased by 2.2% in the last 12 months. Energy, comprising 6.7% of CPI, has seen a 2.1% increase over the past year. Medical care, a significant component at 6.5%, has also increased by 2.1% annually. Education and communication services make up 5% of CPI, rising by 1.4%. Housing, representing 36% of the index, has seen a 5.7% increase for multi-family and a 5.9% increase for single-family homes.
