A self-critical mindset is often believed to motivate action and achievement; however, it more commonly leads to procrastination and negative feelings. Research indicates that self-compassion serves as a powerful alternative. Self-compassion involves three components: 1) Mindfulness—recognizing and accepting difficult emotions and situations; 2) Common humanity—understanding that experiencing failure and shame is a normal part of being human; 3) Self-kindness—treating oneself with the same kindness and support that one would offer to a friend. This approach helps alleviate the negative impacts of self-criticism and fosters motivation.
