How to Measure Your Pulse Oxygen Saturation
Certain factors can significantly affect the accuracy of pulse oximeter readings. Common issues include the use of intravenous drugs, such as methylene blue, which can temporarily drop reported oxygen saturation levels without indicating true hypoxia. Motion artifacts and tremors can also disrupt readings. Additionally, conditions like severe tricuspid regurgitation may lead to the presence of venous pulsation dominating the pulse oximetry waveform, resulting in measurements that reflect venous rather than arterial saturation. Recognizing that these situations often reflect underlying cardiac issues rather than pulmonary problems is crucial for accurate clinical assessment. Therefore, in complex cases involving significant systemic conditions, further testing such as arterial blood gas analysis may be necessary to confirm accurate oxygen saturation.
