Coaching experience is considered more crucial than having certifications, although certifications and familiarity with different coaching approaches can be beneficial. Strong experience in coaching, with multiple modalities used over five to 10 years, is perceived as more relevant. At the highest level of coaching, certification is not a major concern. In the middle range, certifications indicate seriousness and a base level of training but do not guarantee the required coaching skills. Having coaching skills alone may not make someone the ideal coach. Certification can offer assurance for novice coaches but does not replace the necessity of assessing if they are the right fit. Experienced coaches without formal coaching training can still be excellent coaches.
