Evolution of NFL defenses and the place for Tampa two scheme
Despite the evolution of NFL defenses towards more single high and man match coverages, there is still a significant place for Tampa two type schemes. Teams that historically utilized Tampa two like the mid-2000s Bears and early 2000s Buccaneers predominantly focused on cover three with Tampa two being a variation of it. Tampa two is considered a fancy version of cover three with a different zone distribution. While Tampa two remains a common call in the NFL, no defense heavily relies on it, with even the top defenses using it only 20 to 25% of the time. More recently, there is a trend towards quarters, quarter quarter half, and half quarter coverages influenced by coaches like Vic Fangeau and the Ravens' Rex Ryan tree, with teams reaching a maximum usage of 28% for these coverages.
