Belonging and Group Identity
Belonging is intrinsic to human nature, and its absence leads to suffering. People often offer belonging in exchange for certitude and moral outrage. Group identity, such as in Christianity, provides a sense of community but can also create divisions with outgroups. Social psychology shows that once we identify with a group, we feel more belonging but also highlight differences with those outside the group.
