Making Sense with Sam Harris

NOTE

Social Media makes you Worse

Technology has overwhelmed and undermined human weaknesses, leading to problems such as distraction, addiction, polarization, bullying, harassment, and the breakdown of truth. The overwhelming of short-term and working memory leads to distraction. When technology taps into and exploits our reward systems, it leads to addiction. Exploiting our reliance on stopping cues and providing bottomless content leads to addictive use. Exploiting our need for social approval leads to teen depression. Hacking our heuristics for determining truth leads to a breakdown of truth. These problems are interconnected and collectively contribute to a digital fallout or climate change of culture. Like the extractive economy, the race for attention creates this erosion of the social fabric. However, if we understand the interconnectedness of these problems, we can work towards a global response to mitigate the destructive impact on society.
