How assault weapons became the focus of gun control efforts

In the late 1980s, Josh Sugarman at the Valous Policy Center proposed a new strategy to ban guns. Instead of targeting handguns which had little public support, he suggested focusing on assault weapons. Sugarman believed that by exploiting the public's ignorance and labeling these weapons as machine guns, their ban would gain more traction.
