Episode 59: Photovoltaic Materials
Materialism: A Materials Science Podcast
The History of Solar Cells
The photoelectric effect, discovered in the 1800s and credited to Einstein, is the basis of photovoltaics. While a pn junction used to be necessary, it's been discovered that two different junctions on either side of a solar cell work just as well. This has led to the creation of photovoltaics made out of organic and polymer materials, which don't have the same capabilities as traditional semiconductors.
