NOTE

Gender Differences in Vowel Production

Children as young as age four start producing vowels differently based on their gender, with these differences becoming more distinct as they age. In English-speaking environments, men, especially cis straight men, tend to have vowels that are more similar to each other and towards the center of the vowel space, while other groups like cis straight women, gay men, lesbians, trans people, and non-binary individuals use a wider range of the vowel space. This difference is attributed to cis straight men conforming to traditional masculinity norms by having less variation in their vowel production.
