The Role of Compositionality in Understanding Complex Sentences

Models trained on different amounts of data have different abilities to understand complex sentences. A model trained on a small amount of data needs to combine simpler sentences to understand a complex sentence, while a model trained on a large amount of data has likely seen similar structures before and can use memorization to understand it. Therefore, it is not fair to evaluate both types of models in the same way. Another issue is identically distributed evaluation, which was mentioned in the paper.
