Importance of Consuming a Variety of Plants for a Healthy Gut Microbiome

The magic number for consuming different plants per week for a healthy gut microbiome is 30, but this doesn't mean that 29 is bad and 30 is fantastic. The goal is to incorporate varieties of plants like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, seeds, nuts, and legumes. It's important to meet people where they currently stand in their plant consumption and set realistic goals, as jumping from 10 to 30 plants instantly can be quite hard and unsustainable. The average person in the Western world consumes around 10 to 15 different plants per week, with a minority hitting 30. The key is to celebrate progress, such as moving from 10 to 15 plants per week.
