The Decline of the British Empire in Africa
When Ghana gained independence in 1957, the British abruptly departed, unlike the French presence which remained in Francophone Africa. In Anglophone Africa, the Brits left overnight, leaving behind a puzzled population who observed destruction of local infrastructure. Unlike the extensive English settlements in Southern Africa, West Africa had a thin administrative layer of officials without settlers, resulting in a sudden disappearance of the English presence post-independence.
