NOTE

Understanding the Differences and Potential Benefits of 17 Alpha Estradiol

Let's talk about the success of the ITP that perplexes me - 17 alpha estradiol. It's a stereoisomer of 17 beta estradiol, with one bond pointing in the opposite direction. It doesn't bind well to traditional estrogen receptors, but it does have an effect on estrogen sensitive tissues. The rationale for its use was that estrogens are beneficial, but we didn't want males to turn into girls with 17 beta. When given to male mice, 17 alpha estradiol extended their lifespan beyond females. The exact binding and effects are still unknown, but research is being done in labs to unravel its physiological impact.
