Instead of focusing on talking to customers about product features and needs that may change over time, it is more effective to study the underlying metrics that customers use to measure success in getting a job done. These metrics are stable over time and provide a reliable set of criteria for product development. There is a lack of agreement among product teams on what a customer need is, which hinders the ability to identify unmet needs and develop the best solutions. Companies need to agree on and have the right definition of a need. In nearly every market, there are approximately 75 to 150 different metrics that customers use to measure success. By studying these metrics, meaningful and actionable information can be obtained for product development.
