NOTE

Understanding Complexity through the Free Energy Principle

The complexity observed in systems can be understood through the Free Energy Principle (FEP), which proposes that complex systems arise to simplify the predictive challenges faced by their components. Free-living organisms navigate a highly unpredictable environment, leading to greater uncertainty. In contrast, multicellular systems offer a predictable habitat, reducing this uncertainty. This shift promotes a simpler environment, as simpler systems naturally evolve to create complex structures for improved survivability. For instance, single-celled organisms prefer microbial mats due to the reduced complexity and increased predictability they provide. Furthermore, this principle applies at a fundamental level, as seen in the attraction of protons and neutrons within atomic nuclei, which also serves to minimize their free energy.
