The Contribution of Hallie to Diving Technology
In 1691, Hallie revolutionized underwater exploration by inventing a system to replenish air in the diving bell. He built on the earlier work of Papat, but used a different method to avoid plagiarism. Hallie's diving bell had a wood and lead construction, with a glass top for light. It featured a valve connected to a barrel that could be refilled with fresh air. This design allowed for pressure equalization inside and outside the bell, making it a precursor to modern diving bells. Hallie also invented a helmet-like apparatus for divers to temporarily leave the bell. This remarkable invention is detailed in Hallie's 1714-1716 work titled 'The Art of Living Underwater'.
