The academic reward system often does not align with ideals of transparency and reproducibility, creating a dilemma for researchers. If transparency and rigor are not incentivized, there is a higher likelihood of both less transparency and more opportunities for academic misconduct. The Reproducibility Project, which aimed to replicate results of papers published in academic journals, found that only a little less than half of the findings were successfully replicated, indicating a significant challenge in ensuring reproducibility in academic research.
