Early Information Theorist
Charles Darwin cannot be considered an early information theorist because he didn't have an understanding of the basis of inheritance as the replication of information. This concept was not discovered until 1958 when how information is encoded became known. John von Neumann, who proposed the theory of self-replicating machines before that, could be regarded as an early figure in understanding this concept. Despite this, Darwin's observations on variation, selection, and inheritance on his voyages highlighted these as properties of information, although he lacked knowledge of the underlying mechanisms.
