NOTE

Muscle Metabolism: A Common Misconception

Each organ exhibits a distinct metabolic rate, with skeletal muscle being slower than more active organs like the liver and heart. While increased muscle mass leads to higher energy expenditure at rest, studies show that obese individuals often have a higher basal metabolic rate (BMR) due to greater lean mass. When correcting for lean mass, BMRs between obese and non-obese individuals become similar. Exceptions exist, such as in hypothyroidism, but the impact on metabolic rate is typically less significant than commonly believed.
