Under extreme stress, individuals may falsely confess in the hope of gaining police support and showing mercy. The psychological pressure can lead people to disregard long-term consequences and say anything to escape the immediate stress. Additionally, under internalized false confession, individuals genuinely come to believe the falsehoods conveyed by the police.
