Metabolic Adaptation: A Varying Impact
Inter-individual variation in metabolic adaptation is significant, with biggest loser contestants losing more weight and less lean mass than those undergoing gastric bypass. At 7 months, their metabolic adaptation averaged 419 calories per day, though its meaning and stability were unclear. By the six-year follow-up, their resting metabolic rate was approximately 500 calories per day lower than predicted, indicating substantial metabolic adaptation. Notably, there was no correlation between the extent of metabolic adaptation and weight regain; however, those who maintained the most weight loss exhibited the greatest metabolic adaptation. Ultimately, metabolic adaptation appears strongly influenced by genetic factors and the amount of weight lost.
