Low Protein Acites as a Risk Factor for SVP
Low protein acites, defined as a total protein of less than 1.5 in the fluid, is a high-risk factor predisposing someone to Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis (SVP) due to low oncotic pressure, increasing the likelihood of bacterial translocation. A total fluid protein of less than 1.5 is the cutoff point recommended by AASLD guidelines to identify this risk factor.
