NOTE

Understanding Coping Mechanisms and Honoring Them

The stories we tell ourselves and our life experiences drive our behavior. Increasing pain tolerance and busying oneself is a way to avoid feeling certain things. Recognizing and not judging our coping mechanisms, such as fear and anger, is crucial. Internal Family Systems (IFS) has been helpful in understanding and acknowledging coping mechanisms without hating or judging them. Coping mechanisms served a critical purpose at some point and should be honored and thanked for their service. By gently putting them aside when not needed, one can avoid overreactions to small ripples in life.
