Start with individuals' behavior and build up rather than starting with data and working down. The efficient market hypothesis proponents may privately pathologize behavior that goes against the data. This definition of efficiency doesn't reflect how individuals behave. Understanding individual behavior and striving to outperform the average is a more tangible approach.
