Oxytocin is a fascinating hormone that has been around for about 100 million years. It originally evolved for mother-child attachment in mammals, but has since been used for pair bonding and social cooperation in monogamous species. In the last 5 million years, oxytocin has even been reconfigured for trust and game theory settings. The most surprising thing is that in the last 20,000 years, humans and dogs have reconfigured oxytocin so that we both secrete it when looking into each other's eyes.
