Shuhari: Standards vs Defaults & The Spectrum of Mastery
Standards are the agreed-upon way of doing something, where compliance is expected. Defaults, on the other hand, are the suggested starting point for those who are new or unsure. The concept of Shuhari, a Japanese idea of mastery, consists of three levels: by-the-book, occasional rule-breaking, and innovating by creating new rules. Defaults encourage starting at the 'by-the-book' level, allowing for improvisation and rule-breaking as expertise grows, ultimately leading to the innovation and creation of new practices in the respective skill or field.
