NOTE

The Melanocortic System and Its Effects on Skin Pigmentation and Libido

The pathway of light stimulation leads to the release of melanocyte stimulating hormone, triggering skin pigmentation. Activation of the melanocortic system by sunlight not only darkens skin but also boosts mood, energy, and libido. This system is conserved across different species and contributes to breeding in animals. Synthetic peptides like melanatin mimic the melanocytes stimulating hormone, impacting mood and libido differently. PT141, also known as Vilese, activates the melanocortic system and is FDA approved to treat hypoactive sexual desire in women; however, it can also be used off-label by men. Despite its benefits, Vilese, like other peptides in this system, promotes skin pigmentation.
