NOTE

The Impact of Non-Custodial Adults on Youth Mental Health

Non-custodial adults such as coaches, pastors, aunties, and mentors play a crucial role in young people's lives, offering support and a listening ear. The decline of these roles, worsened by COVID-19, is concerning for youth mental health. When de-escalating a suicide attempt, it is vital to identify adults who can support the young person as often parents may not be helpful. With the rise in young people feeling like they have nobody to talk to, the absence of non-custodial adults is worrying. Additionally, after tragedies like the murder of Trayvon Martin, parents of black and brown kids are increasingly keeping their children indoors for safety, a fact that was previously underestimated.
