NOTE

Reducing Sedentary Behavior for Brain Health

The stagnant rate of exercise participation among adults in the US has remained at 25% for decades, despite widespread awareness of the importance of physical activity. To address this, attention could be shifted towards changing other behaviors, particularly reducing sedentary behavior such as sitting. Research suggests that reducing time spent sitting could have significant benefits for brain health, as prolonged sitting is associated with an increased risk of dementia. For instance, sitting for 10 hours a day compared to nine hours corresponds to a 10% increased risk of dementia, and sitting for 12 hours a day has a 60% increased risk compared to sitting for nine hours. Therefore, efforts to encourage people to sit less through interventions could potentially have a positive impact on brain health.
