NOTE

Initiatory Passage as a Symbol of Death

Every initiatory passage in life is a symbolic death, a consummation where something separate returns to the whole. Death is like a marriage, a union with the infinite, where one thing ripens while another dies. Symbolically, the girl bleeds and is gone, the flowers plucked by the maiden die, and the root system opens the door to the underworld. In certain rites of passage, death is spoken of directly, signifying the boy's death for the man to live. It alludes to the cyclical nature of life and death.
