Is It Possible To Feed The World Sustainably?
Short Wave
More food Produced Than Needed but high waste and poor allocation
Current food production exceeds the global demand significantly, with an estimated equivalent of around 5,000 calories per person per day, which is double the average requirement. However, inefficiencies in the food system lead to massive losses, including food waste, diversion of crops for biofuels and industrial purposes, and feeding crops to animals. For instance, feeding crops to beef cattle results in a mere 3% of the calories consumed being converted into nutritious meat. To address global hunger, major changes in food production, dietary habits, and biofuel policies are necessary, rather than a shortage of food production capabilities.
