Different purposes: fine tuning vs retrieval in language models
Different scenarios call for different tools. Pure vanilla chat GBT can handle tasks like rewriting paragraphs without fine tuning or retrieval. Character AIs benefit from fine tuning with no retrieval. For grounding models in factual information, retrieval is essential. Fine tuning and retrieval together teach the model how to think and what to think, making them valuable for domain-specific scenarios. Although fine tuning is not currently popular, it may become more common in the future for smaller, more cost-effective models.
