Matthew 1–2

The Two Testaments

NOTE

The Book of the Genesis

The phrase, the book of the Genesis actually is a direct citation or echo of a couple of different passages in the book of Genesis in the Greek translation. The first one is Genesis 2, 4. These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created. And then the second one comes in Genesis 5, where it refers to the list of the descendants of Adam. So Matthew, I think, is consciously echoing perhaps both a traditional way of referring to genealogical lists of ancestors, but also picking up the book ofesis.
