The dark history of intelligence testing and eugenics
Intelligence has been used to justify slavery and forced sterilization of those deemed less intelligent. Sir Francis Goulton, inspired by Charles Darwin, advocated for eugenics, believing that intelligence is inherited and should be selectively bred. Goulton developed an intelligence test to identify the 'smartest' individuals, leading to the forced sterilization of thousands of women who scored poorly on the test.
