Look Again: The Power of Noticing What Was Always There

The Academic Life

NOTE

Exploration of Habituation and Disabituation in Daily Life

Habituation is when we get accustomed to daily stimuli like background noise, lights, or inefficiencies at work, becoming almost invisible to us over time. This phenomenon also applies to relationships where initial sparks fade due to taking each other for granted. Disabituation, on the other hand, occurs when we break from our routine and experience new environments or activities, making us perceive things with fresh eyes and heightened senses. By introducing novelty or a change of scenery, such as traveling or rotating job roles, we can spark excitement and appreciation for the familiar upon our return, much like seeing our own house in a new light after being away. Disabituation allows us to break free from the monotony of habituation by infusing colors back into our daily experiences and renewing our sense of wonder and appreciation.
