Engaging with sociopathic behaviors can induce changes in one's own empathetic responses, as studies show individuals who play characters embodying evil traits, such as the Joker, begin to endorse violence as a solution to problems compared to those playing heroic figures like Superman. Furthermore, this disparity impacts the interpretation of neutral emotional expressions; those who played as Superman view such faces as neutral, while those who played as the Joker are more prone to perceive them as hostile or negative.
