The American project is not uniquely depraved, despite claims that it was built to oppress people of color. Slavery is a global historical phenomenon, and the United States was not the apex of human awfulness. The American project has always been defined by its ideals and optimistic vision, aimed at expanding the horizon of freedom for more people. It is concerning that not enough people appreciate the remarkable innovation that America represents, with its roots in basic equality and human freedom. The narrative that America is terrible and should be ashamed is ahistorical and dangerous.
