Defining True Agents

The term 'agents' has been used within the research community for a while, particularly in the context of the deep learning era. An agent is defined as an AI system that can reason independently and take actions to achieve a specified goal. Initially, goals were set using reward functions in deep reinforcement learning. However, there is also research on goal-conditioned agents in robotics or video games where specific goals are assigned to the agent, requiring it to interact with the environment to accomplish the task. Coding agents, such as creating a calculator app, exemplify these agents. While some agents show promising capabilities, there is still progress needed to enhance their performance to reach a higher task completion rate, potentially requiring a combination of techniques including reinforcement learning to achieve higher success rates.
