NOTE

Diversity and Cultural Exchange in Historical Societies

The Maratha king in Thanjauur ruled over Tamilians using Telugu and Sanskrit as the court languages and had a diverse army consisting of Rajputs, Bundayalas, and Afghans. This historical setup reflects early globalization with the influence of Vijayanagara, where Telugu was the court language. A Telugu play titled Satidana Suramu, meaning 'take my wife', was written by Shavadhi's Maratha-speaking nephew and was performed during temple festivals. The play is a parody where Moravatlu, a Brahmin, decides to flirt with a woman against the advice of his chela, emphasizing the cultural exchanges and diversities of that era.
